The year is 2488. Humanity is fractured. Greed and war are the only things worth relying on. The advancements of the third millennium are a distant memory now, as the wealthy horde power for themselves and the rest of humanity fights for the scraps, paranoia and distrust eating away at their hearts. It wasn’t always this way…
In the early years of the third millennium, a plague worse than any in human history swept the planet, cutting through the populations of the world like rotten grain. Humanity simply couldn’t react quickly enough to the mutations of the virus. Before too long the strain became too much.
Healthcare broke first, with trade and resources quickly following. Eventually international relations broke down to nothing, and cities across the world were reduced to ash.
The rich and powerful ran, as they always would, to form colonies on the Moon to wait out the catastrophe. Six decades after the “Splitter Virus” outbreak, humanity was in tatters. Governments had been risen and fallen, and entire countries had been wiped from existence. Humanity needed a light from the heavens, and somehow that’s exactly what they were given.
Crossing galaxies along the span of eons, the meteor had been coming. When the world was young and a meteor had killed the dinosaurs, this meteor was still coming. Rome burned, the world changed, and still the meteor had been coming. Until that fateful day on the Eighth of August 2088, when it slammed into the southern Atlantic Ocean with the force of twelve nuclear bombs. The tsunami caused by the impact caused devastation on a massive scale, and it took another year for rogue scientists to investigate the crash site.
What they found would change the course of human history. It had been theorised of course, but now the scientists had indisputable proof. Metallic Hydrogen.
They couldn’t keep it a secret for long of course, and with the “Tesseracted Meteorite” as proof they were soon able to synthesize it themselves, nicknaming it Medrogen. What they discovered was a near perfect energy source. It was efficient, powerful, and strong enough to be used for nearly anything they could dream of. Once it was discovered, Medrogen changed the world almost overnight. Some even started to worship the meteorite, claiming it had been sent to them in their hour of need.
A true vaccine to the Splitter Virus was finally discovered through the aid of Medrogen powered supercomputers, and healthcare systems advanced by almost two hundred years. NGOs raced to bring aid to as many as possible, improving the infrastructure of many countries who had been devastated in the collapse. Unfortunately, like flies to rotting meat, the lunar colonies saw this precious new resource and wanted it for themselves.
“Why do they deserve such a powerful resource when we worked so hard to build ourselves up from nothing?” came the cry from the wealthy dynasties. They did what they did best, they bought it for themselves, and anything they couldn’t buy they took by force. Soon Medrogen was in the hands of the most powerful people on earth. Weapons were developed which could cut through any shielding. Shields were created that could stop any weapon.
So came the propaganda from these new corporate dynasties, who started selling their weapons to anyone who could afford them. Heroes lived, fought, and died on the battlefields, all while the corporations grew ever richer, raking in the wealth of war. But even now, as they try desperately to maintain their power through alliances, negotiations, and intelligence gathering, there are factions rising to kick them to the ground. Factions born into a world forged through greed and distrust, but ready to risk it all to save what little remains of who we are.
